Using Financial Gerontology in Retirement Planning

Major changes in family aging and dynamics are creating a new financial reality for Baby Boomers, reported Neal Cutler, Ph.D., Associate Director of the Gerontology Program, University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Cutler introduced Boomertirement attendees to:

  • The “Senior Sandwich” generation – A term he uses to describe the many Baby Boomers who are still caring for their children, while also financially supporting their parents.
  • The Filial Fraction – A tool with which financial professionals can help their clients quantify the likelihood of caring financially for an elderly parent, which can have a substantial impact on their retirement plans.

Cutler said financial gerontology and tools allow financial advisors to help their Baby Boomer clients better understand and navigate their increasingly complicated wealth span.
